ADD/ADHD and Bi-polar disorder?

Amonth or so ago, there were some reports about the major increase of serious mental issues in teens. I believe it was a 4 times increase in the diagnosis of bi-polar disorder in teens in 10 years. Is there any evidence (anecdotal or proven) that the rampant mis-diagnosis of ADD/ADHD and the medicine prescribed is part of the problem? Can you give me any doentation on either position? Thanks so much. I ask as both a mother and a person of curiosity.
