Is Chicago a nice city to visit, are the people friendly?

I have never really been to Chicago, except O'Hare for a few layovers. But was thinking of maybe going to visit for a long weekend(4 days) what are some things I wouldnt want to miss, also would you recommend getting a car while there, I would most likely be staying downtown if I were to go, and most likely be a solo traveller.
