Should I get a cellphone for grade 9?

I'm told that everyone has a cellphone by grade 9. Is this true? I don't have one so should I get one for grade 9? But my parents wont allow me till i'm 18. Are they being realistic or are they being overbearing and, well, not realistic. All my friends have cellphones, even the younger ones! What should I do?
